When you think of things that you do not like to do what tops your list? For me it has to be moving. We have moved four times since we were married and each time I swear will be the last. When we were first married we rented a duplex. My husband moved in the first of the month. I was on a lease in my apartment until the first of the next month so I slowly brought things over and put them away with each trip we made. After we lived there a year we bought a small farm house. We had not accumulated too many things so this move was not all that bad. Our friends and family helped us move. We loaded up pickups and cars and drove everything the twenty miles from the duplex to the country home. After we lived there for four years we found a house that was much newer and larger and that had more acreage with it. We again packed up trucks and cars and made several trips back and forth. That time we moved thirteen miles so the back and forth was not difficult. Twelve years later we decided to move again.

After being in a house that was quite large for twelve years we had accumulated many things. We were down sizing a great deal in both space of the house and outdoor space. We were moving from a twenty acre five bedroom home with a full basement into a two story three broom house with a partial basement and one acre of land. We were moving because this smaller home was on a beautiful lake. Prior to moving we took many of our belongings to a flea market and sold them. We needed to downsize a great deal. This move was forty miles and it needed to be done in a short time span because of the spacing of the closings. We decided that we needed to contact moving truck rentals to get a truck so we could get everything in one trip. Our closing on our existing home was at ten o’clock in the morning and the closing on the lake home was at two in the afternoon. The first one was in a town forty five miles from our home and the second closing was ten miles from the home we sold. When we called the moving truck rentals we wanted to pick up the truck early in the morning so it could be parked in the yard and ready to go when we came back from the second closing. We had from the time of the closing until ten the next morning to be out of the house. We took one large load of outdoor things to the lake house when we did the walk through the day before, but this only touched the tip of everything that needed to be moved. The moving truck rentals had the truck ready for us at six o’clock in the morning. We had the truck until noon the next day or we would have additional fees. The moving truck rentals came with a dolly, packing materials and covers. It made the process much easier. Everything went smoothly and we had everything moved in the time frame. We agreed we will not move again for a very long time.

Example - you have 98 and the board is 65K - Player A bets into you for $1 the pot is $7

To figure out whether to call or fold take his (bet + the pot) and take the (bet x the odds) if the (bet + the pot) is greater call if not fold

Lets do this example - you have 4 outs (four 7's) the odds for four outs on the turn is $1 x 9 = $9 the pot is $1 + $7 = $8. The Pot is less than the odds so it would be correct to fold

Note

If you are drawing to a hand that could be beat even if you hit one of your outs consider folding.

A2 board 2TJ bet is $1 pot is $8 >> Fold

98 board is TJK bet is $1 pot is $8 >> Fold

In all hands you had odds to call but even if you hit you could still lose so it is correct to fold.

Could there be a raise behind you? You must also take that into consideration before you call

You have a mediocre hand

you will often be faced with a situation where you have an ok hand and don't know how to play it example - AJ and the board is QJ2

How many players are still in the pot? If the answer is 3+ play the hand like a drawing hand unless no one shows stenght than play aggressively by betting raising or check raising (with the intention of raising people out not building the pot). The larger the pot the more aggresive you should play.

If there are only 1-2 people in the hand play very aggressive and very tight.

Don't be afraid to raise - If player A bets you can raise to force out player C plus player A will probably check to you on the turn giving you options.

If at any point you're raised play the hand like a drawing hand.

You have a good hand

Play this hand very aggressive until someone shows strength then play the hand like a drawing hand.

Check raise - if you're in early position and you're sure someone in late position will bet, check than raise. This will force the players to call 2 bets, if they do its probably the incorrect call whereas if you bet out they would most likely be making a correct call.

example - AQ and the board is AsQh6c

Don't slow play! Bet out no matter how many opponents there are its probably correct to bet out unless you're sure you can check raise.

If someone infront of you bets call if the pot is small (only a few opponents and there was no raise preflop) and raise if the pot is large (5+ players or the pot was raised preflop)

If someone raises your bet and you have position wait for the turn to raise him, this is because the bet doubles on the turn. (Exception - there are others in the pot raise on the flop to get these extra bets they might drop out on the turn most poor players call the flop with anything and fold to a turn bet)

If you don't have position example - you bet Player A behind you raises, re raise him back he could be looking for a free card.

play this hand just like you would a great hand with a few exceptions:

If someone bets in front of you don't raise forcing your opponents to fold unless the pot is huge.

If you have a very aggressive player to your immediate left check so when he bets you can trap the entire field into 2 bets. (If the pot is large it could also be a good idea to call the flop bet then raise the turn bet trapping atleast some of your opponents for a double sized bet).

Estimating the total cost

As much as every computer wants to deny the inevitable, your data is only as secure as your backups. You can also manually copy your files from your active drive partition to your backup drive partition as long as you do this regularly. This is one of the least advisable forms of backup out there, because the backup partition becomes as useless as the main partition if your hard drive ever crashes.

Internal Backup, Multiple Disks

You can also set up another hard drive for backup within your computer. This hard drive is a separate entity from your active hard drive, so it presents greater protection and data security in case your active hard drive is corrupted. In this case, you can use the methods listed above, or you can use a technology known as RAID 1 to create a mirror image of one hard drive on the other hard drive. The advantage of RAID 1 is that your data is completely safe if you suffer a hard drive crash, but this will not protect you from a virus or spyware infection, as the infection will be written to the backup drive right along with the good data.

On Site, External Backup

A more secure form of backup, external backups allow you to backup your files using external storage media like USB hard drives, CD-R(W)s, DVD-R(W)s, and high-capacity flash drives. Flash drives and external hard drives can be conveniently connected to your computer’s USB port when it is time to back up your files. For backing up with CDs and DVDs, you will need a CD or DVD writer, respectively. For any of these backup methods, you can still use backup tools that sometimes come with the backup data storage media.

Another method for on site external backup is using network servers in the same office building or workspace dedicated to backing up data for the whole network. This backup method can be done automatically if the network administrator has set it up for individual clients. The network administrator can also do this manually, or each user can do his or her own data backup manually.

Off Site, External Backup

The key to this method is backing up data and storing the backup data storage device somewhere else. This type of backup method is done to protect not only from drive failures but also from catastrophes like fire, flood and earthquake.

Off site backup allows you to backup your files on a web-based server located far from your own physical location. You can also store backup data in discs and external drives which will be kept in a data storage vault that is physically located in a different building, city, state, or even country. There is no backup more secure than an external backup, but web servers can be expensive, so you may want to simply use your on site backup media and carry them home (or even store them in a safety deposit box). This still allows you to have a full backup without the hassle and cost of using a web server for your backups.

As a family psychologist, I’m always interested in learning about different therapeutic approaches to helping kids. One approach that receives much less attention than it deserves is therapy involving animals, especially pets.

Animals can help reduce the vulnerability children feel when they are working on different types of behaviors or emotional challenges. Whether you have to talk to your child about “all the missing cookies” or a more serious matter, the presence of a pet can go a long way toward reducing his or her discomfort and self-consciousness. Being able to hug a dog or pet a cat while dealing with some tough issues helps to limit the feeling of “being on the spot.” The warmth of an animal’s body, the softness of its coat – the very fact that it is a living thing – provides an opportunity for emotional relief and connection.

Many pet owners say they enjoy the unconditional love an animal provides. What is perhaps more important is the opportunity a pet provides to express love.

I’m not suggesting that you immediately rush off and buy a pet if your child is dealing with behavioral or emotional challenges. But if your family would like a pet and can make the commitment to provide it with a good, safe home; it’s worth considering. Your child may enjoy researching different animals and planning for its care.

Many parents have learned that pets are an excellent way to build empathy as well. So much of what children struggle with during learning is a lack of fluency brought on by their own self-consciousness. Anxiety inhibits the neural connections that make learning easier. Isn’t it harder for all of us to learn something if we are worried about doing it well enough? The presence of an animal reduces that self-consciousness and supports the capabilities of a more relaxed mind.

In her thought-provoking book, Why the Wild Things Are, psychologist Gail Nelson writes eloquently about animals in the lives of children. She cites studies demonstrating that when animals are present in the classrooms of young children, it helps them gain control of the emotional swings that are part and parcel of early childhood. Dr. Nelson also notes that by third grade, animals are much less in attendance – probably for the same logistical reasons it is hard to bring animals into traditional therapy sessions.

In my own clinical office, I have fish which, while not being as physically accessible as a cat, dog, or guinea pig, are still a source of projection for the children I work with. “Can you see Mr. Little?,” I might ask. “Does he feel shy like you do sometimes?” “How do you like my shark? He thinks he’s so tough he doesn’t have to listen to anybody – does he remind you of anyone?”

In so many ways, animals connect children to a reality larger than themselves. A child who cannot bear to share with his brother or make a concession to please his sister may faithfully walk the dog or forgive a chewed-up baseball glove—learning to nurture and empathize in the process. The companionship and devotion typically provided by the family pet can be of great consolation in a hectic household, at times when a child is “in the doghouse,” dealing with a tough transition, or feeling sad or lonely.

Clean Up - Take about a weekend to completely go over your pond. Clean up and unwanted bulk material in and around your pond. Inside your pond, clean up all leaves, slit, and other material from the bottom. Also, remove any plants or flowers that will not make it through the winter. Around the pond, clean up anything that can blow into your pond, as you are not likely to notice this debris until the end of winter. Taking the time to make sure that as much debris is removed as possible will prevent potentially harmful bacteria and parasites in the future.

Stop Feeding - You must remember to stop feeding your Koi during the winter. When fall begins and the temperatures hover around 55 to 60 degrees, only feed once a day. Once the temperatures drop below 50 degree for the first time, stop feeding completely. Even if the temperature goes above 50 degrees, still reframe from feeding your fish. The majority of Koi, when healthy and the temperature is above 50 degrees, take at least four days to completely digest food. If you mistakenly feed your fish to late the food will not digest and will end up killing your fish. Do not mistake you Koi as hungry when they open to their mouths to you. This is more of a learned reflex then hunger. If you are concerned about not feeding them, remember that fish eat other things besides the food you provide them, especially if your pond contains a large amount of natural plant life. If they are at all hungry and you are not feeding them, they will fill up on this.

Check Up - Do you seasonal check up on all your equipment. This includes everything from your filtration system to your store of preventable medications. Since the majority of ponds in the world lie dormant during the Winter, you are less likely to be able to find the products you need. Make sure your emergency kit is ready and up to date, which should include medications, bags, nets, and your water testing kits.

Prepare For Cold Weather - Prepare for cold weather by investing in the items you will need during the summer. Koi have been known to withstand constant temperatures as low 39 degrees, and temperatures slightly lower then 39 degrees, for short periods of time. When buying a heater, remember to research what size you will need to adequately heat your pond during the winter, otherwise ice will still form, causing potentially dangerous amounts of gas in the water, due to it being trapped under the ice. In extreme events, it may be a good idea to have an emergency tank inside available.

Turn Off All Water Sources - In colder temperatures, your heater will be working hard to maintain a water temperature suitable enough to keep your fish alive. If you have water features such as waterfalls, streams, or constant moving fountains, make sure to turn them off during Winter. These features will circulate water, and constantly bring new, and cold water into your pond. With these switched off, the only water that your heater will be responsible for is the standing water in your pond.

Chuck and I got involved in our first car club when we lived in Rochester and had our Corvette. We had a blast. Met a great bunch of people, did a ton of events. In fact I can still remember our first event. It was a car rally and Chuck and I got the second place trophy.

However, like any group, we had cliques. Now, don’t get mad at me for the monikers that are coming. They have been around a long time and I didn’t make them up.

All of the following groups love their cars, just each in a different way. First there are the polishers. Their cars are pristine. They will use toothbrushes to get their batteries cleaned. I mean you could eat a meal off their engines. You won’t find a spec of dust on the outside, inside of their cars, and inside includes the engine and trunk.

The racers, believe in a clean and polished car, however, their main concern is POWER. They want to get the most they can from their engines. It is all about having the fastest car!

Funny aside, when Chuck and I went to the NCCC convention they were giving away a LT1 engine and when the polisher at our table won it, you had to hear the racers. We wished him the best, but told him we were jealous, and we were. Would have loved to put that baby in our Corvette.

Then we have the groups who believe street rods, hot rods, muscle cars, or antiques are the way to go. There are also those who believe in all original, no changes. However, you also have another group that doesn’t worry about it, as long as the car is what they want.

We love a nice clean and polished car, while we would like matching numbers and all original, if an aftermarket part is warranted we will use it. To Chuck and I it is about having fun with the car. We want to drive it, not trailer it. However, we always have believed in the motto “to each his own” and respect other people’s opinions.

One thing we all have in common, is the love of cars and that is all that is important.
